Default Any experience getting papers for a motorcycle?

Anyone have any experience or know what it takes to get papers for a bike that you bought without them from someone other than the previous owner? Thanks

Just curious what paperwork is necessary and if I'm going to have to hunt down the previous owner.

I'm not sure if I am understanding this correctly but do you mean that you purchased a motorcycle with out a title?!

What papers do you mean? The only thing I can think of is the title to the bike and buying a bike is the same as a car. The bike could be a salvage title or stolen or salvaged and pieced together with stolen parts. With out paperwork I wouldn't even consider the purchase.

The bike was abandoned. The VIN had already been run by the police, and the bike is not stolen.

best thing to do is go to the dmv and ask whats necessary....or if u know some 1 with a shop ask them to put a lien on the bike for u since u already paid for it

I'm not 100%, however, when I was a kid I found an abandoned moped and in order to get a title in my name I had to surender the bike to the police and after 6 months (assuming no one reports it stolen within that time) I got it back and got a title and was able to register it. That's probably what you are going to have to do.

BTW it was a Honda Express II and looked like this.

I used to take it to Pocono and VIR

Lol, I was hoping to avoid a trip to the DMV and I bought it from billman so I'm not worried about theft or anything. Looks like I'll be hunting down a shop or heading to the dmv. thanks!

I know shops can put a hold or lein or something on the title. I forget what it's called but you do have to go to either DMV or through a shop. A shop I worked for had a car that some customer left and the dude dissappeared. They did something with DMV and it did take months but they were able to get a title for it.

It varies from state to state. Here in AZ, you would have 2 options.

Bonded title: You have to give the MVD a certain percentage of the value of the vehicle, then they give you a title. After XX days, I believe you get your money back as long as the previous owner doesn't try to claim the vehicle.

Abandoned Title: You have to show proof that someone has left a vehicle on YOUR property for (I think) 6 months. Once it hits 6 months, you can go to the MVD and file the papers for an abandoned title. They send a letter to the address on file for the last registered owner. If that person claims the vehicle, you have to surrender it. If they do not claim it, you get the title. Both processes take time.

Did you get a bill of sale? How did you end up with this bike?
