They have the Motorola E816 phone available with a monthly package and as a 'Pay As You Go'.
However they tell me that the 'Pay As You Go' phones are specially coded and you can't switch a phone that was originally purchased for a monthly plan over to the Pay As You Go.
Sounds like
to me.

Ampd is a subsidiary of Verizon. Its like Scion....sure its pretty, but its a toyota. Ampd is basically verizon geared towards youngins. I personally, would never get any service other than GSM, and in NY, that leaves you with Cingular and TMobile. All other services are yesterday.

Thanks Dave....
My primary phone is a Cingular BlackBerry. I picked up an Ampd phone a few months ago as a backup (knowing it operates on the Verizon network). There are places that Cingular just doesn't work.
I've used it so little that I wanted to reduce the plan to a Pay As You Go but they are telling me that the hardware is different and I need to buy another phone. I just find that hard to believe considering they offer the same model phone on their web site with both types of plans.
Anyone here work at a store that sells Ampd phones?

etc etc...I can give you a list of 100.
The nice thing is, you can just pop SIMs in an out, and have a totally different phone/number....and/or use as a backup.
However, Im thinking its pure BS in terms of hardware. I think its software. The PAYGO phones probably have software that read the balance on the phone, etc...
