I dont think anything compares to the original Exorcist. The Omen was pretty creepy as well.
The Shining, Alien, Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Agreed. Alien and The Shining. Both traditional gothic, caught-in-the- haunted-house-with-no-way-out tales. Much of The Exorcist's scare factor came form simple gross out tactics, shock value and the buzz that surrounded the original release. Likewise with Jaws though I still enjoy watching it and +1 and I can pretty much recite whole blocks of dialogue.

Definitely JAWS!!! The gore fest horror films that have been in favor with the public for the last 15 years or so are such garbage. You see so little blood in Jaws but you never want to go swimming again after watching it.
You don't have to show a body being ripped in half, someone gushing blood, or someone's skin being ripped off to make a movie scary. IMO it takes more talent to make a movie without these things than with.
