I'm going fishing this weekend. I go fishing every weekend. That's what I do. Fish.
Also, every time a guy on a boat goes past I get a little jealous. So it got me thinking about getting a boat (like 15-17') that can be used for near-shore fishing. I've been casually hunting for a well used Boston Whaler Montauk, unfortunately they seem to hold their value quite well. I also have to consider trading in my current winter ride for something that can haul a boat back and forth. I think this is going to get expensive.
Tons of good Montauks for sale right now on Craigslist. I've been looking for a friend of mine. I think the prices are pretty good. Plus, when you go to sell, you pretty much get your money back, so all you really need to worry about is operation and maintenance costs. I'm pretty sure you can do all the regular maintenance yourself, so that will save you a bunch. There's a nice one for sale in Canton right now. I bet you can get it for less than the asking price.

I dont regret buying a boat, i dont think its as expensive as everyone makes them out to be, its all relative. if you get something huge and use it out on the ocean and get a slip somewhere your costs are going to be much larger then something smaller 17-18 feet that only gets used on lakes and gets trailered. With that said, i have had more issues with my boat trailer then i have had with my boat.
With that said, if you intend on using it on the ocean, from day one you will be wishing you bought something bigger.

Caught nothing this weekend. I did have a fish on the line at one point but it got away (I didn't set the hook that well, my bad). My brother on the other hand caught 5 stripers all between 14-24", not keepers but at least there was some action. I think he has an equipment advantage as well since he was the only guy consistently pulling in fish on the beach that day. His reel (a Shimano Baitrunner) has a cool mode that lets the fish run with the bait, then clicks and helps set the hook or something.
