I know, i must be crazy.

But recently i have been very seriously contemplating selling my s2k and buying a decent used boat.

I really do enjoy the car, but not as much as I used to, I have the truck which I do not mind driving, although the gas milage isnt the best. I feel i could spend alot of nice summer days out on the lake with the wifey, the dog and friends. the car is limited to me and the wifey.

I feel like a boat would be a funner toy? I know its always better to have a friend with a boat, but i dont have any friends with boats!

Thoughts? bad idea?

car is getting up there in milage 118k not sure how long i have to go before it starts to need serious $$ dropped in it. (although it runs great currently)

 

Boats are $$ to maintain and insure. A few years ago my father and I looked into getting a boat for an additional toy. Turned out we could rent a boat for 5 weekends a year for less than a years worth of insurance and trailer costs for the boat.

For us it would not have been a good financial move, YMMV.

I'd keep the S personally.

My company does some boat storage and work on pleasure craft. I know what some folks spend on boats, even small ones. I could have an extra million to spare (but I don't). If I did, I wouldn't not spend it on a boat. I like Mike's idea. Rent one when you want one.

yah i have heard those acroynmas a thousand times. But tons of people still own boats. So I am tempted and i find i would get plenty of use out of it. I just gotta get a good grasp one what the yearly maintance cost is going to be, that will probably steer me in the proper direction.

Honestly, the S2000 is relatively cheap to maintain if you don't continually rack up the miles on it. Even if it has 118k now, maintenance on it will pale in comparison to that of a boat. Selling the car won't really get you "boat money" anyways.

If you want a boat, why not buy something smaller/older/simpler first, and see how you like it? If the S2000 ends up sitting there collecting dust, you can always sell it later... since it's already mostly depreciated, there won't be too much difference in value from between this summer and next.

Are you considering saltwater or freshwater for boating?

 

It would be pretty awesome to have a boat.
