Ben take heart,
my wifes s430 tips the scales at 4130 lbs. ( probably more like 4400 with the 4-matic)
while no one would refer to it as toss-able, it was actually a lot of fun on the side roads of the blue ridge parkway, for me as the driver anyway

F430 Scuderia has a dry weight of 1250 kg, which equals to 2,756 lbs. Add another 100+ lbs for fluid to bring the curb weight close to 2,900 lbs. I still wouldn't mind owning one though
And the 135i with its I6TT will be above 3,200 lbs so it is really not that close to S2000 weight.
AWD does add quite a bit of weight to a car. The 328i weighs 3,340 lbs while the 328xi weighs 3582 lbs., roughly a 250 lbs difference. Still, with GT-R being Nissan super halo car, I kinda expected Nissan to go beyond a ho-hum effort to keep its weight in check. With it being what it is, it's just another high-power, heavy car among many.

if you rip out everything and spend probley another 50Gs on the body and suspension like carbon everything you'll shave off massive amounts of weight also then you change like carbon drive shaft and then change pipes to ti stuff then think you're golden F430 Scuderia is a beautiful piece of art

I'm looking forward to the US release of BMW's 1 series. the 135i which will have the twin turbo V6 and should come in close to an S's weight.
I know, I wanted one myself although I still need to drive one though.

Alot of it is also because of the size of the cars. They have gotten bigger with every new model. The size of the 3 series for instance was sub-compact in the eighties. They were smaller than Honda Civics. Nowadays, look at the 335i. The 335i is even bigger than just the previous generation from a year or so ago. Another example is the Accord...early 90's Accord were about the size of Civics, then late 90's early 2000's, they were slightly below mid-size, and look at the new one that just came out...it is huge. Big cars add more weight, and require a bigger engine and everything else needs to be bigger to tame the weight.
