the guy who flipped it may have done you a huge favor.
by selling it he assumed all lemon law liability.

Just hope the dad who called you forges a bill of sale\back of the title and is able to get it registered. Since you left the title open, you left the middleman the ability to sell it to anyone, avoid getting taxed on it, and disappear completely. If things get ugly, you're the only once the dad can attack.

The current add says "title in hand." Whatever they have, Steve is not signing it. If they have Steve's old title, and plan to fill in names, then they are forging documents and not paying sales tax. Steve may have to explain things, but the truth is the best defense to this sort of stupid lie.

What they have is a title that Steve filled out and signed already with no buyer info. If Jose screws someone and skips registering it in his name or transferring it to a dealer, the paper trail leads back to Steve. I'd never suggest Steve lies and writes up another bill of sale, but this still might come back to him either way.
Steve throwing away the bill of sale is, of course, a huge mistake. Steve should try to recreate all of the information he has about the buyer. Steve should also make copies of the current Craigs List add to at least have some record to show that someone else was selling the car at this point, not him. Steve should keep whatever contact information the current owner gave him.
