legal question for bill
so i guess the guy who flipped the prelude just vanished and i just got a call from the buyer's father because they can not register the car in RI .
They have the title that i gave the guy who took the prelude BUT for some reason the guy who flipped the car never gave them a bill of sale or had the title transferred over to him - we left that info blank on the title
The dad is now asking me if i could give him a bill of sale and sign the title over to him
i have no problems helping the guy out BUT i could not sell the car in MA knowing the car would not pass emissions (the check engine light etc etc)
what would you do bill?

yup signed the back of the title but left the info blank. the buyer asked for it that way and he was in rush to pick up the car didn't think anything about it until today's call and of course i tossed the bill of sale i had the buyer sign
on one hand - i want to help the kid out who bought the car ie give him a bill of sale and fill in the title
BUT on the other hand - i can just see when they don't get a sticker they try to re-coop the $$$ from me

why dont you just do a bill of sale and write down that the buyer acknowledges that the car will not pass inspection and is intended for parts only, or soemthing along these lines, and then have the guy sign it

as long as you signed the back of the title, that's all you are obligated to do, its not your fault that the next seller dissapeard after he completed the sale....
sometimes its not worth your effort to help someone cause it can bite you in the a$$

I would be very careful here. I will dig through my books, but there may be some laws against not completly filling out the title at time of sale. Stuff like that is really looked down on because of the fact that it leads to abuse of the 7 day registration rules and other shady practices like what this guy who flipped the car pulled on the new buyer.
If this guy who bought the car can never register it now, the ball started rolling with you not signing the title so you may want to just wash your hands of it.
