Work has been slower than normal where I'm at. They pretty much took away our overtime (a few months ago staying after was encouraged and appreciated) and alot of time is spent doing odds and ends to at least appear to be doing something. The companys response to this slowdown has been, oddly enough, to hire more people. Three new people in my department alone have been added in the last two weeks to further share alot of imaginary work. This backwards thinking coincides with the pattern of other decisions by upper management to stretch a nickle from here to china, yet piss away thousands and thousands of dollars on utter junk we have no use for.

They had some belt tightening this summer which shed about 10% and possibly another 10% Q1 2009 after a few executive meetings I was recently attending. But interesting enough they are cutting back on new features on the application side but ramping up a lot on the infrastructure side with data center moves and other efficiency projects. Oh did I say that I will be leading some data center moves. Lucky me. at least the paycheck still comes on Friday.

I work for a company with 20k employees. This morning I checked out the internal web site for job postings: there were exactly 9.

A friend of mine applied for a job where I work like 2 weeks ago, they
haven't even started interviewing people so I'm guessing they're on
a hiring freeze too.

There's an unofficial hiring freeze that started last Thursday.

Ironically I have been seeing more real opportunities in the last week or so than all summer.
go figure.
of course those are ads and don't mean crap til I get hired.

We're on a hiring freeze, too.

However, when the company has facilities in 11 states they sometimes must hire someone in a local area rather than transferring the responsiblilites to someone in a different state.
