in 2002 we stopped at the ferry to go over to Statton island to see the statue of liberty ( enable irony here).
we had to go through a security check equivalent to any airline terminal.

yup i had to walk back to the car with my little 1 inch knife.
maybe they thought I would carve my initials in the toes of the statue, except you couldn't get within a 100 ft as they had it chained off.
I had a similar incident last fall. I completely forgot that I left my Gerber multi-tool in my messenger bag. It has a ~3 inch knife blade on it and the security guys there seem to take their job very very seriously. I got a stern talking too and the entire time they looked very very angry. I was escorted me out of line and basically was told I could come back to make the next ferry if I didn't have it on me. Stashed it in the Men's room, and then made ferry, picked it back up after the trip. The security there does seem a bit of overkill to me even for post-9/11-NYC.

I also have one of those promotional

Victorinox Swiss army knives with clippers, blade, toothpick, tweezer and nail file on my work keys and
one of these in my lunch bag.

We'll call it a personality conflict. After today, no need to go there, IMO.
