Why do you want whole life insurance? We have a couple of those policies (small ones, not sure I'd bother again if we were making the choice now)
Can you take your life insurance with you if you ever leave your job? If so, adding to that policy may actually be cheaper than you think.
Be prepared to dish out $$$ for 300K in insurance. Folks who smoke pay a higher premium and you'll have to take a physical too. Buy as much as you can afford, as if you go to adjust the coverage down the line, any you have new health issues they can reject you for the extra coverage, and your only option will be to keep what you have.
If term insurance is OK, check SBLI of MA, and be sure to make me your beneficiary.

Steve, why do you need more insurance? Insurance is essentially an instant estate to leave to your wife and children. If you have a 50K policy, that should be enough to pay the funeral costs, and pay the mortgage until your executor can sell the house. Make sure you have a will in place and a trust if you are leaving assets to children (nieces and nephews).
