Default Hey, guys... NorEaster 2007?

Hi folks,

I think the New England community really stepped up for NorEaster 2006. It was a dynamite meet, and so many folks helped plan and execute. Plus, we had unbeatable weather. Well, you know how I feel, since I think you all feel the same way!

It was around this time last year when we kicked off the NorE 2006 planning. A few of us Vintagers got back from Lake George and started blowing on the embers. Those of us who had lingering concerns about competing with other meets felt it was time to move forward with our own party, and everyone agreed...

Anyway, I'm just wondering how folks are feeling about next year. I really *don't* want to push everyone to do another big meet unless the objective is to establish a NorEaster dynasty -- I mean, we threw a hell of a party this year, and that's a great memory (as far as I'm concerned).

Personally, I think a smaller track weekend, maybe out at the Glen or Lime Rock, or maybe even NHIS would be a riot! I dunno. We certainly have seen a track focus kill Fall Colors and if we want to build the NorEaster as an ongoing thing, that wouldn't be the way to do it.

I'm just thinking out loud. I'm a little bored this afternoon, not having Neb to run out to "the store" in... I think I'll take a walk outside and contemplate how lucky we are to be living in New England on such a grand day.

Interesting that you posted this tonigh Chaz. I just got back from the Vintage Gathering in Gettysburg. Several people asked if we were going to do it again in 2007. One asked because he wants to plan a meet, but doesn't want it to compete with the Nor'easter. We really do need to make a decision on this.

Glenn, you are the Forum leader and CO here. Plus, you did so much of the work this year that it was crazy. Please tell us if you want to do it again in 2007. If so, I think several of us can step up and take a lot of the work off your shoulders.

two schools of thought

1) do it again bigger better louder

2) let another group take charge and provide them with all the support & knowledge from our past event so they will succeed

i will say that i am not too sure a "track" event will bring the crowd together like the last nor easter - just have a look at the FC fiasco.. surely not something we wish to repeat.

If we do in fact go forward, I will say that New England needs to repeat the past success by making sure there is a little something for everyone.

maybe the core group should meet some where and toss everything on the table to see which direction should be taken

That's a good idea, Steve. I completely agree with what you just said, on all points.

I like the fact that there was something for everyone to do at the nor-easter. not that we should try to please everyone but having options during the day and a big dinner/drinkfest at night to bring everyone together

I'm in for 2007! And as previously offered, willing to help. I'm good as a planner, organizer, listmaker etc.

If we do a track day (which I am ALL for) lets consider Watkins Glen or NHIS as Lime Rock requires you to have a roll bar and I don't think I'm alone in NOT having one (yet?)!

Might also consider having an option of letting people do the main drive again (or a different route) for anyone who did not want to go to the track.

Sunday at the 2006 Nor'Easter we didn't Autocross but went out on the same drive again that we had done on Saturday with a group leader.

Great thoughts, folks! Based on the response, I'm gathering that folks want to do this event next year, which is great. At the end of NorE 2006, I think the event leaders wanted to do it again, so I suspect we will.

Managerially-speaking, I think we have two key strategic decisions to make quickly. So, just continuing my stream of consciousness:

1. Do we want a track event? If we say "yes," then I think we have to plan to keep the scale of the event to less than or equal to last year, and it defines location as well. By the way, this is not the same thing as offering auto-X, which seems to work out well as an alternate activity for people and isn't divisive to the community.

2. When do we hold it? Jeez, y'know, looking out the window, we shouldn't forget how spectacular New England can be in October. The first Fall Colors event was actually held in upstate NY, I believe. On the other hand, how can you beat the weather we had this August for NorE 2006?

Final note: maybe there's some other idea we need to consider. The "something for everyone" approach is really great as the foundation for a big meet. I know the casino focus we considered last year got too expensive; but hey, this is New England and there's a million possibilities.

Nor'easter 2007 is being considered.

But I'd also like to consider having another group/region host an event in the place of the Nor'easter

If a Nor'easter 2007 was going to happen... a track event will cost a lot of $$$$ for the participants... an autocross is financially a better option. But, keep in mind... we barely even covered our minimum amount of cars we needed for the autocross.

Sooo... if a Nor'easter 2007 was going to happen... where would it be? Western CT? Western MA? Southern NH? Eastern CT?

Ok, here are my thoughts.

This year we can do it in Western or Central Mass and use the mohawk trail routes that we run all the time. It would be easy to put together a great 2 or 3 hour drive. These are the best roads in southern New England.

We need to find a competition venue. If you put a pin in the map where the Mohawk Trail roads are and look around it, you will see that we could pick a hotel halfway between the Mohawk area and either the same CT autocross we used this year, or Devens which is a much better surface.

As for the track, I'm all for it. If we can find a group that runs track days up there, we could just sign up as participants. The sign up for this would just be limited. Maybe 20 cars or something. The rest of the group will go on the group drive.

Near Vermont Actually any of those locations aren't too bad. Mass and NH are 3 hours, CT is 4.

Vermont S2K Days is a tenative go for Sept 14, 15, & 16, 2007 so if we could schedule before or after, or set a date soon so *I* can reschedule that would be great.

I'm still trying to figure out a nearby track or Auto X location for Sunday for those interested... SCCA group is pretty active here and they may be able to help me out with a joint get together (multiple makes).
