Default Help need advice!

Hey guys

I have a 2002 S that started making a high pitched screeching sound coming out from the Right rear tire area. The sound started when the car was in reverse. It happens going forward but not as often. I noticed this sound about 1 week ago.

Has anyone else had this problem? Drive train and tires / wheels all stock.

Any ideas?

I hope it is not the wheel bearings or the diff. I am hoping for brake / rotor problems.

Applying the brakes changes the pitch on the sound. The sound is there with and with out brakes applied.

Thanks in advance.

James

Sounds like it would be brakes! Could be old pads or maybe a rock os something got in there. It does happen lol.

Sounds like a brake issue, possible wheel bearing as the diff normally does not screech it howls.

Is the sound always there or just once in a while. If not always, how often and when is it likely to happen? Does it happen at all speeds? Does it change pitch as you accelerate?

Bearings usually click and grind more than screech. Rear diff. is possible, but less likely if it's definitely coming from the right side. Could be a hung-up caliper or pad or foreign objects as SI JASON suggests.

Also check the metal shield right behind the rotor, it may be rubbing on the rotor.

Thanks for the responses. I will take a look at the brake / rotors. It is happening when the car has sits for several hours. I think I need new pads any way. Do they make a sound when they are getting low?

Thanks again.

Some cars (Nissan-Subaru-Toyota) has a small pin located near the pad. When the brake pad is low or very low, the pin will scrape, notify you a screeching sound.... it's time to put a new pad.

I'm not too sure if HOnda S2000 has this piece.

True. I think most brake pads feature that.
I would start by changing the brake pads and doing a thorough inspection while I was in there.
