I recently got the Western Digital TV Media Player. Just hookup a thumb drive or hard drive via usb and you can watch till your hearts content. That is all the legally bought movies
The WDTV is a pretty cool box. One of my co-workers brought it in and we tested it with some movies I encoded in various formats (xvid/mp4/avi) and all of them played without issue. For a small box that does decoding, decent interface and for like 99 bucks you can't go wrong. The ONLY thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't have network access to the drives you attach so you could drag/drop new media on to them.

Additionally... "backing up" DVD's, even if you own them, is illegal because the decoder is stripping the CSS encryption. I remember this being a big deal like 10 years ago. It's a stupid law and I actually don't remember if it was deemed "fair use" or not.
