Sorry, not true. A removable hard top is not a substitute for a roll bar.
Roll bars are required in all Prepared cars and in all convertible and open cars regardless of class. Roll bars are permitted and strongly recommended in all classes and may be required in the future. A roll bar is a steel one- or two-hoop roll-over protection device, solidly mounted to the structure of the car, and provides two inches of space between the top of the roll bar and the top of the driver’s helmet. Commercially available “harness bars” and “style bars” are not acceptable roll-over protection.
Factory installed roll-over protection on open cars is not acceptable. Specifically, the Porsche Boxster or Boxster S/993/996 convertible system, the Honda S2000, and Mazda MX-5 Miata factory equipment are not acceptable for competitive use. Convertibles may not use removable hardtops as a substitute for roll bars. A competitor may appeal to the Chief of Tech for acceptance of factor-installed OEM roll-over protection. The decision by the Chief of Tech is final.

If anyone is interested in attending a COM event (and you should be), you can checkout the Memorial Day school. NO gate fees, just sign the waiver at the gate, drive thru the tunnel, park somewhere out of the way. You can wonder the garage area, talk to the drivers, look at some really neat cars, etc. COM is an extremely well run club with an excellent safety record. Having to put in a rollbar might be a pain, but you will be that much safer whenever you drive, (especially in Mass.)
