Car related: Brake oil change?
Ok a car related post. Thinking of changing my wifes DD brake fluid. Its a 98 accord and has around 140k miles. I don't think brake fluid was ever changed.
After some research it says to replace with Honda DOT3 fluid every 45,000. So the fluid is in desperate need of changing.
Anybody have any special technique? I am thinking of getting one of those pumps to replace the fluid.

Funny....I've been working on my DD ('97 Accord) and realized that the brake and PS are probably original......too
I think I'm going to have Erin pump and I'll fill.
As far as Brake Fluid....isn't the new stuff backward compatible?

My advice... on an older car with high miles, stick to the factory recommended fluid.

I need to do mine as well. Honda recomends replacing the brake fluid every 36mos regardless of milage. I am over by 12mos now. Is it a simple process of opening the bleeders and pumping till it's all out and then re-filing and bleeding, or is there another method.

You MUST close the bleeder after every pump as you will suck air into the lines every time you raise the pedal. Have 1 person pump the brakes as another person opens and closes the bleeder. Remember tokeep the fluid level in the master cylinder up to where it belongs. Easiest way is to install Russell Speed Bleeders on the calipers. They have a builtin 1 way valve so 1 person can bleed their brakes. Piece of cake!

start with a turkey baster to suck out the old fluid out of the reservior.
then gently refill with new, bleed the brakes until the new fluid appears at the bleeder.
remember to top up as you go. there is nothing more annoying than sucking air into a line that is almost done.
and don't forget to top up when your done.
oh and don't re-use the turkey baster in the kitchen

Yeah I was thinking some mechanical pump might be the ticket. I have the speed bleeders I bought years ago and never put them on the S. But for the DD I hope I don't have to do it the old fashioned way because its a PITA.

GEORGE! Let's get together and do this some night or weekend. It's easy I know how to do it and have the hoses that would work to make this job easy. I think I even have a turkey baster that would work too.
