I have never understood why GM needed to have several brands that sell essentially the same exact vehicle with different badges. IMO, they could trim fat by just having Chevy (cars and trucks) and Cadillac or Chevy (cars) GMC (trucks) and Cadillac.

I mean some of the cars don't even make an attempt to look different than the one form a sister brand besides the name plate.

Why did they even do this to begin with?

I never understood it either.

Steve, while the US made cars are somewhat better than in the past, you have to admit that they crumble much faster than their forign counterparts.

My 2000 Explorer was shit by 2002 when I bought the S. My wifes Explorer is just as bad. It has needed brake calipers twice, a wheel bearing, CV axle, Ball joints, full exhaust, shocks, the radio illumination is dead, the trip computer is messed up. I mean really, WTF. Yeah, all cars have SOME problems, but US made cars are shit when compared to Jap cars, plain and simple.

You can't call the diff exploding on an S owner after he drag races for two years a "problem". I'll take a faulty map sensor that needs a whack over replacing half the car like I need to with a domestic.

The engines last VERY well. The rest, not so much. The mechanics throw parts at them like they are feeding lions at the zoo.

I think they use a diffe3rent business model for the fleet vehicles anyway. If they could build a civilian car/SUV with as much staying power as my vic, I would buy it. My SUV hardly sees the type of abuse and idling time that the vics do and yet it sucks. They must be built different. Thats a shame.

100k, we started having problems around 80k or so. If it wasn't paid off, I would trade it in. Now that it's paid I just want it to last for a while. But, if I have to toss a car payment worth of parts into it every month, it will kind of defeat the purpose. I can't help but think Ford had that idea when they designed how long it would last, hoping I would get fed up and buy a new car. In the end I may have to, but it damned sure wont be a Ford.

mtbf - mean time between failure - is built into just about everything

but again to use dave's point - his car is awesome - sure it is.. he takes care of it parks it 7 months out of the year and does all the maintenance - take a 30k domestic car and do the same thing and i'd bet the car would just as good as his
