But that was just the start, more money to wire the truck, for a spare wheel+tire for the trailer, tie-downs (which were surprisingly expensive), etc.

^Yup. My V10 Ram is wired... even has a gooseneck hitch in the bed. One trick that helped me is to find a low spot to position the trailer's wheels. If that's not good enough, jack the tongue of the trailer up with it still attached to the truck. A second set of ramps and some blocking can make the run longer, thereby decreasing the slope angle.
Worst case scenario, take the front bumper off. That used to intimidate me, however, it is a snap. If you need me to, I can borrow your trailer and test these scenarios out for you.
