PC based I would use Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid, or Vegas (In that order)
Mac based def use Final Cut Pro. (I can't believe your FCP is crapping out on you, it's more than likely user error )
At ODU we use something called Velocity. But then again, I have a full video studio to work with, etc.

Once I make a movie timeline and render it it doesn't matter if I first save it as a self contained movie file or not, but when I try to export the file as a quicktime it just sits there and show's that it's working on something, then 30 minutes later it finally creates the quicktime file but there is no video in the file, audio only. I went through all the capture settings and export settings and there is no reason it should not be working. it's set up to export audio and video. If I take the same movie file and multiplex it for DVD it works just fine on DVD.
I hate macs. I can't do anything correctly on those machines.

Well the program is not necessarily crapping out but here's the problem, and this didn't always happen!

Have you tried to un install and re install?
Where is the "add/remove programs" command on this thing? This machine was given to me. It's about 5 years old but it's a top of the line Mac Desktop machine with 24" flat panel monitor. Worked good for video editing till this started happening.
