Veterans Day is just around the corner...
I know we have a few more days until Veterans day, but this totally made my night last night and I wanted to share...
I was on a late flight last night. I was fortunate to board early (Southwest - open seating), and found out from the flight attendant that it was not a full flight. I prefer the aisle seat, so I headed to the back, where there were a ton of open seats. I ended up sitting next to a National Guard soldier in uniform, returning from Iraq. He just finished 11 months, and was headed home to see his son and family. True to military form (operational efficiency), they had booked him on a flight from El Paso, to Austin (where I got on), to Baltimore (where I was getting off), to his end point, Providence, RI (getting in after 10pm).
One of the things we talked about how he hadn't eaten anything since before noon, and how he couldn't wait to land in RI so he could have some of his favorite wings. We managed to touch down 30 minutes early (go Southwest!), and he got off the plane to search for food. I figured the least I could do was to buy him some food, and he ended up choosing Subway. As the Subway guy was making his sandwich, he was asking about where we were headed, and who had served where (I got out of the reserves in 03). When we got to the cash register, the guy refused to take my money. Instead, he just thanked us for our service and told us to have a nice day.
Some days you just have to really love this country, and the people in it.

Allison,
Thanks for sharing this nice gesture, not only on your part but the merchant as well.
As a Vietnam era Army veteran (who was spit on for being in uniform in the summer of 1970) I am VERY HAPPY that attitudes towards those that serve this great country of ours have changed.
BTW, on Veteran's Day Applebee's is serving up one of six menu entrees for active duty military or veterans. More information can be found HERE
