Agraria (or is it farmers and fishers now) at the harbor is one of my faves. There's also a good asian-fusion restaurant there, and a nice sushi restaurant too.
As for nightlife, I like the Shadow Room on K, but that's probably skewed a bit b/c a good friend of a friend co-owns the place, and I always have a great time there.

You gotta check out that sushi restaurant then. It's ultra trendy, and probably a bit overpriced, but they have some imaginative combinations there, and an awesome cocktails menu to boot. I really like it. It's called Maté.

A big social scene used to be in Adams Morgan (NW DC), but now much of it has moved out to Arlington (across Key Bridge from Georgetown) to the Wilson Blvd corridor - Rosslyn, Courthouse, Clarendon, Ballston. Lots of young professionals live out here and are out and about pretty much every night. Many nice restaurants and some clubs. Downtown DC has many good restaurants, from expensive to not so. I'm not a sushi fan, but here is a link to sushi restaurants:

One of my favorites downtown (and not that expensive) is Jaleo, a Spanish tapas place at 7th and E Sts, NW. You need reservations there for sure, though. If you are an Open Table member, it's great to make reservations that way. Another casual place in Arlington is the Astor - a Middle-Eastern place that has wonderful food - lamb, kabobs, salads, and great pizza. It is a family owned place and not expensive. On Pershing Dr, right off Route 50. You need to drive there.
Since you will be in Alexandria, Old Town is nice to walk around and has some good dining, too. An old fave of mine there is Landini Brothers (Italian), right on the main drag (King St) near the water. Not necessarily a young crowd, though, and a bit more upscale. There are many other places to dine up and down King St, but it's not a club scene. One thing you will encounter downtown and elsewhere is traffic, and expensive parking. So don't bring the S. You may want to consider taking the subway to go to Arlington and downtown - there is no stop in Old Town, so you will have to park there (street or garage). Have fun.
