Default Thinking about making keychains

I work at a fabrication shop as a drafter/designer and i have access to a CNC Machine. Im thinking about taking the logo below and making some keychains out of 1/8th inch aluminum. Im not lookin to make money off these (maybe like 5 bucks each), I just want to mess around with some cool logos and go from there. it could be something exclusive for the MA group. Also if you have any ideas for a keychain let me know and ill see what i can come up with.

(the letter/number will be connected but the depth will make the letter/numbers more visible.)

I would also be interested in a prototype. Might want to look into some leather backing as well as it might be uncomfortable getting stabbed in the leg with an S

Also, Might want to look into copywrite stuff....I think the guy who made the engraved voodoo knobs almost got sued by Honda. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

None the less, I think it would be cool. Trying to think if I saw any S2000 key chains at Honda last time I was there.

Rick, who makes the "S" badges, got a threatening letter from Honda and had to take the "2000" off the badges he sells. You might want to contact him (ricks2k.com) for guidance as to how far you can go.

I'm sure it's still illegal, but as long as you make a single run in small quantity and don't sell them for profit, you wouldn't have to worry about much. Case in point--the visor plaques recently sold by a member here on s2ki. As far as I know, that guy hasn't been sued yet

In any case, I would be interested in seeing some designs. A while back I bought a steering wheel shaped keyring with the S2000 logo off ebay. I really liked it, but it would have been cooler if looked like the actual s2000 steering wheel. Plus, the darn thing broke after 6 months or so. But, it might be a little hard for you to manufacture considering it contained a spring and appeared to be cast rather than machined.

You cannot use the same font (or anything similar) without being liable (and selling at cost does not cover your ass). Rick was asked to remove his items under threat of a civil suit, but ever since he hooked himself up with S2kC, he's been fine (S2kCA has a working relationship with Honda).

Yes, you can slide under the radar if you sell one or two batches and be done with it, but it doesn't make it legal (I'd do it for a cool little item that I personally wanted). Essentially the company is protecting itself from brand dilution, and too keep your copyright you must pursue any and all infractions, no matter the size. Hence, if you sell enough to come to Honda's attention, you're going to get a letter.
