Default Need a little winter tire advice

Not feelin the love over in the tire/wheel forum... can any of you guys help me out?

http://forums.s2ki.com/forums/showthread.p...threadid=180090

Besides these, I also found a set of 225/50/16 Blizzak WS-15's brand new on eBay for $460 shipped. Would the Dunlop M2's be worth the extra $18 for better dry-road performance?

Thanks!

I just purchased a set of 4 Blizzaks WS-50s through Jim at TireRack.com. All sized 205/55/16s. $103 each. $442.68 shipped to Richmond, VA.

I've installed them and driven on a still snow & ice covered drive. I'm very happy with that purchase. AAAAND I feel good knowing I helped support a site sponsor .

PS. OH...also looks like TireRack.com is actually cheaper . Call TireRack's phone number 888-541-1777 and ask for Jim. He'll take care of ya! .

Thanks Dave! Wow, I thought 205's wouldn't fit on the rears. That is some really useful info. I will definitely give Jim a call tomorrow. In the meantime, here's what I'm currently considering:

Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22
205/55HR16 and 225/50HR16
$543 shipped

...

Dunlop Winter Sport M2
225/50HR16
$478 shipped

....

Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50
205/55/QR16
$441 shipped
...

Michelin Arctic-Alpin
205/55/QR16
$395 shipped

Anyone have any more guidance for me? Should I stretch the budget to the LM-22's or the M2's, or just go for the Michelins and save some $$$....??

I'm still looking on eBay too... there are some possibilities.

Thanks!

First off...as far as tirerack.com goes...there's a limited number of snow tires available currently ...so "shop fast" might be the operative word if you're looking for dedicated snow tires.

As for 205s on the rears...yeah, I agree. Jim didn't have 225s for rears, but confidently suggested 205s all the way around. HOWEVER...to Jim's credit (should anyone argue this point), I was quick to point out that I have NO INTENTION of using these tires to perform in any way other than getting my S2000 through snow/ice. I will not be pushing these tires into corners on dry days. I will not be finding 100+ mph on straightaways...etc.

I too highly recommend Jim at Tire Rack -- great guy and very, very ready to give helpful advice. Just bought a pair of S03s for the rear from him last month. Haven't had an opportunity to drive on them much (and the temps are too cold to really check them out), but I'm sure I'll be happy. Front S03s didn't need replacement yet (whew!), but those rear tires seem to simply melt away!!! annnnnnnd definitely do NOT go in snow/ice.

Little thread Hijack

I want to give Jim@Tirerack another big

He helped me with rubber all around for my new wheels, but to make it a little more interesting....while we were on the phone he realized that I lived down the street from his brother....and to make things better - his brother is a customer of my family's! I happened to mention to Jim that I wanted to AutoX with the new tires - upon which Jim told me about how he has had a difficult time convincing his brother to take his car out and wanted to know if I would talk to him. Well, 10 minutes after I got off the phone with Jim I received a phone call from his brother. His brother owns a Checkered Flag Mini Cooper S and a 3 series - and wants to come AutoXing with us in the Mini this summer! His brother also happens to know my whole BMW store and sounds like a very good person! A few of the Virginia Beach people may get to know him soon

When Jim makes his visit to Virginia Beach this summer - we're gonna have to have a meet for " and Thanks to Jim@Tirerack!"

Back on subject

Question: It is now February - how much longer is winter weather an issue in the rest of the Mid-Atlantic?

Interesting. I've been wondering if I could save some bucks by going with all-seasons instead of dedicated winters. In my thread over in the tire forum, the only responder recommended that I the extra $$ would be worth it. But I'm still considering it.
