Yeah... been pushing it too long. The oil levels are near 'L' - and it's quite black.

I drive mine mostly in the 2.5-4k range 95% of the time - I get most of the fun of the car from speedy offramp turns. I just cannot afford another ticket to hike the insurance rate...

This is how I figure it - Honda says to change it every 7500 miles. I know that using synthetic enables you to go longer - the figures vary but it's anywhere between 1.2 to 2x the range of regular oil.

So I figure since I drive it in a very mild range and also do a lot of highway cruising, it's only become Red Alert status recently since by those calculations above, I don't want to go near 10,000. BMW also services their cars at over 10,000 miles, so I doubt it's THAT bad.

Usually I still like to change it every 6000 though. Sooner if I've been revving it a lot.

Am I way off? Feel free to elaborate. I'm quite thick-skinned too.

I, personally, change my oil every 7000 miles. I won't let it get to 9000 miles no matter what it is. Are you using synthetic? What kind? Just because the manufacturer says one thing, it's not always the best for real world use. Manufacturer will tell you not to change the plugs for 100,000 miles, are you going to do that? I would hope not. Performance will always decrease if you don't keep routine maintenance items fresh. Oil will break down slow or fast based on a lot of factors. Sure, reving your car up in the high rpms will do it too, but there are other factors. So, just because you don't run your car above a certain rpm point doesn't mean it's not breaking down faster than you think. Just my $.02, but hey, it's your car. You can change the fluids as you please.

but I need to drive conservatively since it's been almost 9000 miles since my last oil change... so I'll head there by myself.

Mental note to smack John next time he sees him.

John you live in Silver Spring there is no way you are in the mild use category or whatever Honda calls it. If you think you are really OK get an oil analysis done and I think you will be surprised.

I always use synthetic Mobil 1 with the highest quality filter I can find - sometimes it's the Mobil 1 filter, sometimes it's the next step down... I forget the name of the brand, since it's been so long since my last oil change

I don't think I'm ok, per se - the Red Alert went off at around 8000-8500. Like I said my preferred interval is around 6000 when I get it, but this time I've been especially bad. Too much spit to worry about in the past month+. I was going to get it done this week but I figured I could just get it done at the meet.

Heh - do you say that (re: Silver Spring) because of the traffic? Most of the time the traffic isn't too bad when I commute. My commute is about 12 miles (5 city, 7 hwy) and I get to work in about 15-17 minutes.

Do you use synthetic or the regular?
