Looking for alternative to Comcast Internet
I just read that Comcast will limit it's internet service for heavy users. While I'm sure I don't use anywhere near an excessive amount of bandwidth, I don't like this idea just based on principle so I've started to look for another internet provider.
I checked and Verizon isn't available at my address in Owings Mills so do you know what other broadband service might be? Also anyone know the rates and reliability?

Comcast, like any ISP, pays for bandwidth. They are having serious ethical issues paying for a small minority of the subscribers to use the vast majority of bandwidth knowing damn well that this bandwidth is used for piracy. It's not right for the casual http / email user to pay the same price as the 16 year old that rapes the network for every DVD / APP / XBOX / TV and MP3 release to hit The Pirate Bay.
Since content filtering would cause even more of a shit storm, what they should do is tier the pricing structure.

They already tier the pricing structure don't they?
Just be glad you don't have Cox. They started this capping shit years ago and their caps are even lower than Comcast.
http://www.cox.com/policy/limitations.asp
Cox Tiers their pricing, and their maximum package only allows 60GB down, and 15GB up.
After I got the first nasty email from Cox stating that (at the time) I could only upload 1GB per day, and I had exceeded it -- I dropped them immediately and have been quite happy with Verizon DSL ever since. Its not as fast as I'd like, but FIOS is coming soon
Wish I could give you suggestions on ISPs. Unfortunately I think you're usually limited to the cable company or the phone company. Sometimes there are small companies offering wireless service, you could try that.
www.dslreports.com has a service finder that isn't as good as it used to be ... but still might be helpful: http://www.dslreports.com/search
They don't just show DSL services offered either, they show other options.

FIOS FTW, getting 20 up / 20 down at the new house next week with no cap.
The problem is that Comcast is the best you are going to get in most places.
I also have a big problem with the cap and if I had Comcast I would be looking for alternatives as well. If you are only doing email you can get the slower service, so whats the problem? The internet is not a series of tubes people
