A friend's daughter was recently involved in an accident that was the other person's fault. She had an Integra that she had put a lot of money into. Unfortunately for her the other person's insurance company simply totaled the car out at what an Integra of that vintage went for. The value of the vehicle totaled out was much less than the value of the parts she had installed. She ended up buying the wreck back from the insurance company for about $500 and has been parting it out to recoup some of her $$.
Based solely upon her experience I would have to guess that the insurance weasels will find a way out of paying the replacement cost of expensive mods if they exceed their book value of the car.

I mentioned this to the insurance company when they were calculating the final payout and they said they would cover it, but they would need proof of the value (i.e. receipts and such). Once they got the receipts they increased the amount of the payout check. One thing to note though was that I did end up taking some of the mods off of the car (that were easy to take off) in order to sell them here knowing that I would get more than what the insurance company was offering.
I have Nationwide.
What happened above sounds like absolute crap, although she might be able to make more money back selling the mods considering she only had to buy it back for $500.

She has made out pretty good, more than covering her $500 outlay to buy the wreck. However as with most mods, they never sell for what you pay for them!.

how awesome. 2 days after i post this thread, i get @#$%ed up by some going the other way who rips across a lane to make a u-turn. he does so unsuccessfully, taking the car to his left with him, sending it in to mine. (white accord at fault)
just to get
his insurance company called me about 2 hours after the accident saying that there's no dispute about who's wrong, and they'd cover everything, rental car and aftermarket parts included, in the form of a personal check.
to the 2 S2000s that passed by and saw the damage.

That's painful to see Rashad. Sorry you had to learn your answer the hard way.
