Insurance of OTHER covering mods/accident thread
i was wondering what would happen if i got in to an accident where i was found to NOT be at fault but aftermarket parts like a carbon trunk, ings rear bumper, etc. were damaged. wouldn't that person's insurance have to cover it? i guess my insurance company wouldn't because i'd need to let them know officially that that's what i have on there (and my rate would increase accordingly), but would it matter to the other person's insurance company? i always thought they'd have to cover it because regardless, it's your stuff that the other person messed up. am i wrong?
i'm not in this situation, but i always wondered about it.
thanks

It really depends on the company and how your policy works (and if you have any riders on your policy for aftermarket parts or not). If the accident is in no way your fault, why would you notify your insurance agency at all though?
I'd go after the other person's insurance agency and only notify mine if absolutely necessary.
As for the other person's agency covering aftermarket parts, you may be SOL. You're right in theory of course (the other person damaged your things), I'm not not sure whether or not it works like that.
Call up a couple of insurance companies (other than your own) and ask them what happens if one of their insured damages another's car and is totally at fault (rear-ending someone for example).

Most insurance places will cover up to a certain amount. But it also depends on the agent that comes out to do the adjustment. It really is dependent on whether they like you or your car alot

I never told my insurance I had mods, but when my car was broken into, they still paid for the aftermarket head unit and shift knob.

However, when I was shopping for other insurance quotes when I bought my S back in the days, I did see options for extra coverage for aftermarket parts.
