Default Five best weekend getaways from DC

Hey guys, I'm trying to put together the five best weekend getaways from DC. Ideally, I'd like to find a fun, out of the way destination, a good "backroads" drive to get there and a different route back. Any scenic stops along the way would also be really helpful (historical sites, fruit picking orchards, whatever). The more specific you can be, the better.

Thanks!

Will PM you a route that'll take you to Skyline and through GW National Forest when I get home...

My girl really enjoyed going to Charlottesville and seeing Monticello. Lots of vineyards around the area too. Day hikes and what not for the other day of the weekend. There are some decent back ways to get there but it depends where you'd be leaving from. (Literally DC or the DC area...)

The Snowshoe resort is a great get away. Great Accommodations and libations

A group of us are riding up there next week for a 3-day weekend.

The roads out there are just fantastic. It's a good 6+ hour drive if you want the best roads.

The tallest waterfall east of the Mississippi is Crabtree Falls. It's about 13 miles down Route 56 near Steele's Tavern, VA. The fast way to get down there is to just take Route 81 to Exit 205 and then take 11 North about half a mile before turning R on 56. However, if you want the 6 hour version, you can take Blue Ridge Parkway all the way from Front Royal down to 56, and then drive 56 for about 8 miles to the falls.

The reason I mention it is that 56 between 11 and the falls is probably the most fun road I've ever been on. It's a 55mph speed limit for most of it, and it's hard to even get above 40 in most places due to the curves!
