Might be less trouble and expense to find a used low mileage engine.

Dave,

Not exactly new or low miles but affordable and kind of bolt in ready.

Yup...I'd noticed that myself. And compared to my motor's miles...that'n seems young! . [My next comment is in no way meant to inflame seller, etc...just an observation of mine] When I saw that posting I was a little concerned at the rust showing on the lower crank pulley. Made me consider for a moment that perhaps the entire motor had been steam cleaned and that pulley built up a little surface rust after-the-fact. It is because the motor is SO clean that that one item caught my attention. So if it IS so clean, then why do I care? Well, I wondered if perhaps there were signs of oil leaks, etc. that had been cleaned up prior to the motor pull . Now the motor is pulled and no oil pressure, etc. there's no knowing if there are leaks here/there. All that said/considered...it is obvious from the seller's posting that he has seemed quite meticulous with the care of his car over the years...so again, my observations and lept-to conclusions could be 1000% off the mark. And forgetting all that...if I rebuild, then I know (in theory) I should have a fresh motor myself...vs one with 100K miles on it and no knowing the condition of *that one's* rings, connecting rod bearings, etc. So if I'm gonna spend the money, I'm pretty much certain I want to rebuild my own. Thanks for looking out tho'

I hope you find a good builder, I have not heard a lot of stories on successful rebuilds, I am sure there are some. This is not a small block V8

Heard a funny thing from a Older Honda Motorcycle mechanic once, "they never run the same once you open them up"

Get these guys to do it

I agree with George. There is a Durango in our shop right now with a noise in the engine....it was rebuilt 25k miles ago under the factory warranty.

It's just that you can burn oil for many reasons....PCV, rings, valve seals....depending on what it is, he might not need to tear the engine down. In a matter of fact, you'd only need to tear it down if the rings leak. Plus, it's easy to diagnose.
This.

I cannot recommend any shop and agree that unopened is best when possible. Conventional wisdom does say that your jank is worn though! Compression and leakdown first.

Road trip possible to ensure a good job?

Ask for Kevin Helms. Both shops are his, he will be at one location or the other. If you mention me he might charge you extra, or a discount, or both.

Thanks again folks for concerns & advice. After weighing all ideas, my plan is as follows:

1. Drive the car until the motor 'pops' (keeping it lubricated all the while -- by being vigilant in checking oil level)
2. When it is time for a new motor...a new* motor is exactly what I'll be putting in it (crated short-block from Honda)

* My local Honda mechanic will be getting that for me at his cost when the time comes

Side note: How much longer do you suppose we'll be able to get new AP1 motors from Honda?
