and Fairfax Honda sucks! I don't care if they are on a list or not. They rip people off all the time. A bunch of idiots with no respect for the car or their customers. All they see is $$$$.

well, the truth of it is, i'm not mechanically inclined, and I don't own the wrench/socket to take off the valve cover to inspect myself. although this method is not as thorough as removing the cams, is it a sure way to detect cracked retainers? and what is the exact measurement of the tool i need to remove the cover?
the couple of times I've been to FFX Honda they've thrown in a couple of free services, like state inspection and 1/2 off a compression test. i'm just concerned about the experience of the hands that touch my car.

ive only dealt with fairfax honda so far. their customer service isnt half bad but they did rape me over a CEL i had a few months back. it was a faulty gas cap and they charged me $106 which included labor and the cap. i think thats kinda rediculous if you ask me. for all in the fairfax area - which honda do you guys go to that has the best service?

if you want to really find out the condition of the retainers, you really have to remove. IMO, if anyone says they can inspect the retainers without taking them out, and truly inspecting them, isn't really doing a "good inspection".

i went to FFX Honda today and asked a few questions. he (the only guy in the service office) said the retainer inspection would only cost $97. surprised at the estimate, i asked if they would actually remove them, and he said the designated S2000 tech. would know if he should or should not. he told me that the first thing to go after an over-rev would probably be the crank and that my car is probably fine (take that for what it's worth...). he then went on to say that he revs his CBR to 14k all the time and it's had no issues, and that people on internet forums usually blow things way out of proportion (i made no mention of any forum). he was a nice guy and all, but I'd like to cross check his wisdom with you all.
of course it's safer to check than not, but after 6 months of driving after the incident, including multiple redlines, do you think it'd be sufficient to just look without removing anything? would the damage be obvious by now? i know it's retarded of me to ask someone to diagnose my engine over an internet forum, but I'm kinda strapped for cash and I'm hoping someone with experience can chime in on this issue.
on a lighter note, the dealership gets another point with me because I also asked about getting a couple of TSBs done and he said they would contact Honda about getting goodwill consideration

Why in the world would your CRANK be the first thing to go after an overrev???? Umm I'm no expert here but I'm gonna have to call Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
And as far as your car running fine months after the overrev.... I guess you can say its fine, but at the same time, if any minor damage was done it could have been small enough to not cause failure until now...but it might have been building up over this time and might have reduced the overall life of the valvetrain.
I'm not saying that it IS going to go in the next 100 miles or something, but just saying that it might be something you should keep in mind.
