Default Any tire experts here?

I'm having some crazy tire wear on my rears. I made a post in the "Wheels and Tires by Tire Rack" section here but maybe with all of the post s in here I can get one of you to chime in.

I'm having a big problem with excessive tire wear in the rear. I have found several threads with similar problems but no clear explanations as to why.

I have an '03 with 32k on the odometer. The OEM s02's lasted about 16k miles. I then switched to +1 sized Avon M500's which lasted about 11k miles. Halfway through the Avon's I had the UK alignment done on the car. I noticed the Avon's were getting excessive wear in the center of the tire. I dropped the pressure down to 32 thinking the that the pressure was too high but the center wear continued.

I finally replaced the Avon's with another set of +1 Avon m500's. The second set lasted less then 5k miles until they were completely bald in the center. I had the pressure at 32 psi and drove very conservatively.

I have switched to Yoko AVS ES100's in the stock size to see if I can get some better results.

I would have thought with the UK spec alignment I would have gotten inner tire wear and not center. The actual rear alignment numbers are left camber -1.9 toe +0.21 and right camber -1.9 toe +0.18.

Does anyone have any idea why my tires are going like mad? Is my rear toed too much?
Any helpful advice or jokes to get my mind off of my ever increasing tire budget would be greatly appreciated!

I'm thinking my new 4.57 gears aren't going to help my tire problems either

Try a different air gauge.

Thanks

That's the first thing I thought of, I am not sure how the +1 sized tires affect things thouggh

I got 16K on my last set of S02s, I just changed them as they were just getting baldish on the inside and I didnt want to worry about them in the wet.

I have ~2.5 degrees of Camber in the rear.

This is going to sound very assholeish, but buy better tires. First, check your tire gauge

A very good set of inexpensive tires are the Kumho MX's - I got about 12,000 miles per set of rears......on my old S2000.

16K miles on S0-2's is a damn long time! You're not driving your car too aggressively are you?

Oh Contraire

Most of those miles were fun drives and the car was supercharged. I dunno why they lasted so long, I bought new tires last spring and just installed them a year later.

Avon's make some excellent motorcycle tires and I was very pleased with the first set I had on my car. The front two Avon's have at least half of the tread left after 16k on them.

I was going to try the Kumho's but they did not have them in my size when I needed the tires to get home from Hardtopguys. My driving is semi aggressive but certainly not hard enough to waste tires in 5k miles or so I would think.

The odd things is the center tire wear. I assumed my gauge was good since the tech put the pressure at 34psi and four days later my gauge registered 34 at which point I reduced the pressure to 32. But I'm going to use the local advanced auto's tire gauge to check mine.

I'm going to get it re-aligned after this weekend when Bill helps me put on my GC/Koni's. Hopefully I can get this sorted out.

I didn't see your post till just now George. Most people don't get 12K miles on S0-2's.
