I agree, the diameter makes no difference. A 275/40/17 is the same overall diameter as a 275/35/18...but more expensive. A set of Nitto NT01s is $200 more a set...some tires are actually double in price.

I'd be really interesting if Formula 1 would change their rules and allow any tire and wheel diameter to see what would be optimal when price is no object.

Normally the actual tire diameter is the same (because the tire sidewall is shorter) so the tire's footprint is the same. You get quicker turn-in due to less sidewall though. Bottom line is 18 inch wheels on the S2000 are for posers.

I would stick with 17s unless you need wider tires than you can find for 17" diameter. You'll save a lot of money and maintain the performance of lighter wheels.

I'm going big cuz I haz extra power now. 18s square is what I'm planning cuz I got the Gendron FSB anyway and brakes are probably the tire rack Brembo package or something used on line. I'm taking my time on this set up.

Star Specs
235 fronts, 265 rears

or

Nitto NT05
235 fronts, 275 rears

Prices are insignificantly different. What would you order for track/street duty?

Star Spec is a much better tire. The NT05 will be just as good on the street but on the track it will get greasy a lot faster and they just haven't proven to be as good as the Star Specs. I personally think the Star Spec is almost impossible to beat in it's class.

I would go with star spec also because I've tried them and I'm not familiar with NT05, but NT01 I've tried and like it a lot. I still have to figured what is the good square size tire for 18 X 10 but then again maybe 18 X 9 is all I need and maybe 255s for the tires.

If I may...

I see this ending badly in one of two ways. One is the aforementioned excessive power for the S2000 platform and the add'l risks associated with it. The second is the money being spent... and then respent. :-(

Definitely do not want to be a downer here, but trying to have one set of wheels/tires pull double duty is a bad compromise in this case, imo. Buy something for your bling wheel-wise and partner it with a good street tire- include in that selection some consideration for wet conditions. Then, once you have your car set up to be ready to go on track, purchase some beat-to-shit, flat black wheels and adorn them with proper r-comps. You'll have to shell out some coin up front, but take it from someone who has been down this road, you'll be saving money doing it this way.

*Note to all: We were talking tires last night at dinner. Be careful making recommendations on tires you have not run personally. We all drive differently and in different conditions.

**Ron, for street, I would not recommend a square set-up regardless of what front bar you have. You have a heavy foot. Besides, an 18x10 in front?

ok I'm not trying to get bashed here but I'm not as hip to you guys racing lingo. by square I can only imagine ya'll are talking about same size tires in the front and back? or are you talking about how you can get racing tires in either a square shoulder or rounded shoulder(but seeing as how most tires don't come with that option I doubt it)?
