Maybe I'm just picky. I tried on probably 5-7 and while 3-4 fit nice, there were a couple that were just a touch better.

Well at this point in my track career I'll be walking in to say "One of your cheapest full face helmets please" and if another fits a little better for $280 vs $220, I'll still get the one that cost $220. It's already more than I wanted to spend.

I can get an M2010 motorcycle helmet for $115, but the cheapest full face SA2010 is $220? There can't be $100 more tech in the SA helmet. I guess it comes down to the fact that the manufacturer will sell a LOT more M helmets than SA helmets.

In that case you are probably better off searching online. I ordered my open face helmet off the Internet for a good price. The fitment was ok, but nowhere near comparable to what I got after trying them on. It was definitely cheaper than buying locally though.

Call OG and ask for Brian Hair. He will help you navigate your selection and may have some specials.

You will not be allowed to drive with a "M" tech helmet at many (all?) HPDE events.

No, I know that. I'm just frustrated at how much more expensive SA helmets are.

Anyway, thanks for the advice, everybody

I believe Mercedes has loaner helmets for events.

Open-face helmet and a pair of goggles? The extra cost on the SA's is the additional cert testing.

  • Forgive my noobness, but is the J's Camber joint considered "Suspension - Alteration of ball joints/dive angles. +2" (Suspension # 19)?
Thanks!
The J's camber ball joint is a +2 mod. I'm in the process of recovering my computer's main drive so I lost the PT/TT rules but the car is weighed with you and whatever fuel you come off the track with so I think you're ok there.

On the M helmet issue, unless things have radically changed in the last year an M rated helmet has been accepted for everything except wheel-to-wheel racing. I don't even think I've ever seen an HPDE tech inspection look at a helmet sticker. I would say unless the event website or tech sheet specifies an SA helmet then a motorcycle helmet is all that's needed.

Thanks Rob! I'm glad points don't have to go to weight & can go to something else.
