any idea on any hotels/motels near it and how much airfare is going to be from new york city? say departure on saturaday morning and departure at monday morning?

You may want to stay either downtown or on the west side of Indy. I would strongly recommend downtown. It is not far from the track. Most hotels should have shuttles to and from the track. Also, do your best to get there for Friday and Saturday. IMO, practice and qualifying are much more entertaining that the actual race.
