Hello everyone,
Thank you for looking at my ad. If you are looking for a low mileage, original car this is about the furthest thing from it. Much of this car has been replaced or restored. In the 3.5 years I've owned it, i've added about 5k miles. 1500 of those were driving it from San Diego to Seattle. In the last 30k miles, the car has seen considerable effort to refresh/restore/improve it. I have done my best to detail everything below. I have adapted this from my own personal logbook that I keep for all my vehicles, which I'm happy to share with the new owner. Please feel free to reach out with questions. This car is turn key, very dialed in, and only needs a new owner to enjoy it.

History
I am the 4th owner. The car lived in SoCal from 2000-2021, when I purchased it from a long time friend (owner 3). He owns an independent repair shop in SoCal that specializes in the S2000 amongst other things, and purchased the car from his customer (owner 2) @ ~210k. He installed a low mileage used engine after re-sealing it. He went through the transmission and refreshed it. He addressed other maintenance including suspension, brakes, and a host of other improvements. He eventually found a vintage Vortech Supercharger kit which he rebuilt and pieced back together and eventually installed. This was on the car from ~235k to my purchase at ~245k. I removed and sold the kit shortly after I purchased the car. Then I too worked hard on restoring the car...replacing parts as needed or improving wherever I could. Very few items now that have not been addressed.
It always bothered me that Honda only offered Monte Carlo Blue Pearl in non U.S. markets because I always loved that color. It was only available on 3 models, all of which were built in Honda's Tochigi facility: The NSX, the 1st gen Insight, and the S2000. I have a 2002 MCBP Insight. Sadly no NSX yet. The proceeds from the S/C sale funded the paint job. I'm pretty stoked on how it turned out.

This is my 3rd S2K. Previously I had a 2003 and 2006. The 2006 I mostly left alone and sold to buy the 2003 to use for track days. I sold the 2003 to fund some education and a career change. This one here has been my favorite thus far because it has more midrange torque than a stock ECU AP1 can ever hope for, but retains the more raw character the AP1 is known for. Also i'm very happy with how this one drives both in street and track settings. It offers a really nice balance, performing at a level much higher than a stock car but it's still a great street car.

Suspension / Brakes / Misc Chassis:

The following all installed this past May at 249,341:

New front lower ball joints (Genuine Honda)

Inner and outer tie rods and boots (Genuine Honda)

Brand new Genuine Honda alignment hardware. Every. Single. Piece. Not cheap.

Spoon Rigid Collars. 11 out of 12 installed. Note 0.060" shim at frozen bolt (front-most, right) on front subframe to match collars installed thickness.

Custom alignment at Tru Line Bellevue. Mild spec. -1.5* fr/rr for tire life.

In May '22 @ 247,102

Custom valved Bilstein B14-based damper kit from Ankeny Racing Enterprises. Worth reading up on these if you're not familiar; they were very potent as demonstrated by their success in SCCA STR and other racing. I bought these used here on s2ki and immediately shipped them out to RE Suspension in NC for a full service and dyno. Nitrogen set to 150 psi. Dyno sheet available. Note that the ride height was kept pretty conservative to prioritize street function.

Used, healthy engine from LKQ with ~85k miles installed @ 210k.

At this time the oil squirter banjo bolts were upgraded to the revised design and valves adjusted. Retainers inspected, no issues found.

Rockstar Garage/Moroso baffled oil pan installed at 245k during KPro install.

Oil changes have consisted of Redline 10w40 and Honda PCX filters exclusively. Next oil change I was going to back it down to 10w30 as I just haven't had time to track this car like I'd hoped.

The following maintenance was performed @ 245k:

  • New NGK Iridium IX spark plugs
  • Inspected retainers for cracks. No defects.
  • Valve adjustment, all intake set to .009", all exhaust set to .011"
  • Stock injectors cleaned, balanced and tested by Doctor Injector
  • New Genuine Honda valve cover gasket kit (w/ spark plug tube gasket set)
Billman GenX TCT at 248,991 (Preventative. Old one wasn't bad yet.)

Mishimoto 3 row radiator. Factory fans sealed to core with high quality weatherstripping.

Evans Waterless Coolant (very consistent/stable)

New Genuine Honda radiator cooling panel @ 245k

Hood prop replaced with hood dampers. I can't recall which brand.

Electronics:

Hondata Kpro4 tuned by Jeff Evans (Evans Tuning) and I installed it all as Hondata intended w/o any sketchy conversion harness.
This is a rather involved install. I took my time and it's been perfectly reliable. No hiccups in 3.5 years. 27-28 mpg on the road trips i've done including the Overdrive Adventure's "PNW Adventure".

- New Genuine Honda RSX-S ECU

- New Genuine Honda 2006-09 Cam/Crank trigger wheels

  • I wired these sensors into the KPro for datalogging and in the case of the WB, for closed loop AFR calibration feedback
AutoMeter dual A-pillar pod to house the above gauges.
Healthy battery. The car lives on a battery tender 100% of the time it's not on the road.

Drivetrain:

ACT Heavy Duty pressure plate and full face disc (HS1-HDSS) @ ~ 235k miles
I believe the clutch master and slave cylinders were replaced around this time. They are flawless.

Transmission refreshed at 217k. Synchros inspected, found good. Installed all new Genuine Honda bearings.

FAQ

Q: Does everything work?
A: Yes.

Q: What is that cable running near the Radio Lid?
A: That's the cable you or your tuner will use to interface with the KPro. I tried to tuck it as stealthily as possible but keep it accessible.

Q: What does the car need?
A: Absolutely nothing.

Q: What would you do next if you kept the car?
A: At some point I might like to rebuild the lower outboard bolster on the passenger seat. As these seats were sourced from a RHD S2K, that foam in that bolster is fairly worn. The seats are otherwise very clean.

Q: Does the car consume/leak any fluids?
A: It burns what I would consider a very minimal amount for an AP1. I think I added about a quart over the last 3k mi oil change interval.
A: Trans Drain plug? The leak is so minimal I only mention it for the sake of transparency. We are talking 1 drop per month or something like that. Tiny.

Q: What weird quirks or idiosyncrasies does the car have?
A: The stock ECT gauge occasionally lights up all bars on cold starts, and then as soon as it starts to come up to temp it works normally. It has remained accurate immediately after startup so I haven't messed with it. I have been able to monitor and validate its accuracy using both the K Pro datalogger and Hondata phone app which uses Bluetooth for bi-directional communication with the KPro.
A: The KPro relies on the AEM wideband for fuel calculations. When the car is first started, the wideband heats itself before it can accurately measure. It is best to just let the car idle during this process until the wideband comes online. This process is quick (30 seconds?) and painless, but it is different if you are used to stock ECU cars.

Q: Why are you selling the car?
A: The car performed so well at that track day a few weeks ago. The handling balance is perfect. That was the last thing I was working on and I feel like the car is complete now. I've been a little bored with the car for a while and just want to try something different. These cars are so simple and reliable, its part of why people love them. I want something new and different to work on. In spite of my better judgement, i'm going to try an E92 M3 next. I will most likely regret selling this S2000. It's like, the one i always wanted in over a decade of owning S2000s. I'm also looking forward to replacing this car with something with a backseat. We have a young family and when I drive the S it means leaving them behind.

Q: Will you include any extras with the car?
A: I have a copy of the factory service manual that I can include if you like.
