Default Started out looking at MX5

About 2 months ago decided I wanted a new MX5 - I've had MGB, Fiat, in past and currently have a 98 323 Ci - I'm 65 and retired so i wanted to make sure I could still get in and out of car - no problem. Started looking at mxers and found they are between 25 and 30 K - they won't deal on them either... found one I liked, fully loaded, at about 30K. Decided I would take a look at the S2000 - which I knew very little about- I really liked the looks of it - but was a little concerned about having keep the revs up and was concerned about using it as a daily driver. Never owned a Honda auto before but currently have a Goldwing and think its great.

Went out this week and took a test drive on one and found it very confortable and easy to drive even in traffic. I really like this car - little hard to see out of with top up- but all convertables are. I probable will never use this car to its full potential - may never get into the high revs in my daily driving but plan to take it up to Deal's Gap where I have been a number of times on different bikes. Mostly will use it as a daily driver and didn't find it rough or noisey.

I have a salesman who said he will sell me a Berlilna Black model for 31, 200. Is this a good deal for a car that has been essentially unchanged for a number of years and may go out of production soon?

I just discovered this board and its great. Thanks, Steve

Steve, your search should be over (it was for me after that test drive!)!. I paid 31,184 in '05 at the beginning of May. I think I could have done a little better since there was a $600 hold back at the time... but after quite a bit of haggling, I just wanted the car so bad (my preferred color no less!) that when he threw in two 'free' oil changes, I took it. I have no regrets. Yah, you could probably do better if you do some more looking around and are patient, but I don't think that price is way out of line. I know your gonna enjoy those Rev's... go for an S2000!

As for going out of production soon, I wouldn't be too concerned with that. For a good laugh: https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=335110

I liked the MX-5 very much, but after test-driving both cars I bought the S2000. Here are a couple of things I noticed about the MX-5 that you may or may not have:

- the foot rest position wasn't designed well. With seat back far enought that left foot was flat on footrest, I could barely reach the gas and brake.

- the ride felt a little "squirrelly" at upper highway speed.

- the all-black interior was a bummer.

- I definitely preferred the power top of the S2000 to the MX-5's manual roof.

- The MX-5 fell short of my 200HP shopping goal.

Good Luck,
-Bob

Steve3 -- at last look about $31,200 is the dealer invoice, including freight. Most dealers will offer this price without haggling by this late in the model year. Besides, S2000 sales in 06 are well below 05 sales. There is about another $1000 in dealer holdback that Honda pays to the dealer. The $299 lease is back, too.

Interesting info about the MX-5. I bought the 06 to get the VSA, even though 05 leftovers were available for $2500 less.

OK - I got it - 06 Berlina Black - including ipod hookup and Titanium shifter for $31,500 OTD. Tax in SC is only $300 - but we have a killer personal property tax. I thought this was a fair price - they need to make a living too.

I haven't driven a stick in 30 years - but it was supprising how quickly it came back. The car was liquid smooth - I thought it had plenty of torque and was very civilized to drive around town. I thoaught it would be unlikely that I would drive it at high revs but when I say how easily it went to 5K I know I'll get it up to 6-8 after the break-in period. I'm reallly enjoying driving it around and have put aside all my concerns about how loud it would be at speed - my wife and I had a veery comfortable conversation at 60+ . Having crossed the country on a Harly, the S200 is like a luxurary sedan.

Wanted to thank everyone for their help - I intend to join this forum =- you have saved me much more than the admission price on your advise on what to pay for the car.

Thanks again and I look forward to future advice and infromation - I already ordered the convex LH rear view mirror based on the messages I've read in the forum.

Enjoy the S dude, wait till you pass 6,000 RPMs!

Not sure how ''convex'' the LH mirror is, but if its an exact match to the passenger side its not very wide angle. Go to the group buy and passaround forum and get the S2X ones, they also have the blue tint on them which help a lot at night.

Congratulations Steve, welcome to club VTEC!
Once you log those 600 miles, you'll be into those rev's more than you ever imagined

Thanks yflyer. I live in Lexington - I see you're in Greenville - and S3k clubs up htere? Don't see too many Ss down here. Can't wait to get first 600 miles on it - the revs sure do come easy - didn't think I'd get over 5k but now it looks like I'll do 6/7000 regularly.

Ordered the LH mirror from Muz - I wish they just shipped with wideangle mirrors on cars - much easier to see and helps with the blinding lights at night. I'm looking into a hardtop - like the looks for the car with it - just don't know how much of a PITA it is to put on and off. Thanks for all the feedback, Steve
