Should i get an S2K, i need some answers
HI everyone,
great community you have here. i am about to get either an s2k or a z4 and i need some answer about the s2k.
the area live in doesnt have a track, nor mountain roads. what i want i a toy around town, something light weight with "go-kart handling".
basically i want to get a toy that i can slide around small turns. just get the tail out (a little bit of legal fun), not full out drifting as the penalties here are stiff.
the s2k sounds liek a perfect fit but have one worry that is making think about the z4:
all the streets around here will force me to drive between 40km/h and 80km/h in the city. i am wondering if around such low speeds i will have a problem stepping the tail out as i will not have hit v-tec yet, or i will just bounce the rev limiter of the redline in 1st gear.
for this reason i am considering a z4 3.0 due to an increase in torque, which might allow me to slide it at those speeds in 2nd gear.
i have considered getting gears (possibly 4.77) but worry that if i try to slide it, i will bounce of the rev limiter half way through a slide due to the short gearing.
another option is a supercharger. however, im not sure how much this would help. also it would push the price of the s2k high enough for me to start considering a z4M. i dont want to spend that much money at the moment.
maybe you guys can tell me at what speeds you hit vtec in 1st and 2nd gears, and also how fast you need to be going to start getting the s2ks tail to step out and experience that "go kart" handling.
thanks for your help.

please don't slide your car around public roadways. As you're going to do it anyways, do it with the Z4. We don't need you making the rest of us look bad.

ouch, nice welcome here...
the roads i would do this on have completely empty, brand new parts of town under construction with little roundabouts. im not looking to have an accident, just a little fun
anyone else?

I have driven a Z4 and I did not like it. The s2k is a more fun car to drive in all regards. But if you are going to be "sliding" go with the Z4 for the only reason that it wont make the rest of us look bad.
For the record, no one looks to have an accident. The problem is a little fun can turn into a BIG problem.

For most drivers, the s2k is a little too unforgiving to try drifting intentionally on the street.
The z4 doesn't have the same go kart feel as the s2k. But it'll probably be a safer ride for what you want to do.

BMW is the place for you to be...
after you outgrow sliding on around public streets, get a S2K and enjoy a real
sports car for real drivers. Doesn't take much to slide a car around a corner
just get a used Trans Am for that...
enjoy,
