S2k advice from owners
Hey guys, a friend of mine is selling me his 2001 S2k for 19k with 35k miles and it comes with a hardtop. The price seems really good but I had a question regarding the whole plastic rear window deal. Does the upgraded glass window make a big difference? What are the drawbacks of having a plastic rear window? Can I replace it with the glass window? I also read in consumerguide that the 02 + models transmission was tweaked a little to have smoother shifts. I guess the bottom line is should I try to find an 02+ model?

19k for that with a hardtop is a good deal. Consider you could sell the hardtop for minumum $2500.. that puts you at $16500 for the car which is quite reasonable.
As far as the plastic window goes.. it may be difficult to maintain. Could get foggy, creased, cracked.. and it has no defroster. To replace it you should just get a whole new top from an 02-03 which will fit with some modifications. This will run you about $1000.

I much prefer the glass window to the plastic window; it's one of the main reasons I traded my first s2k.
A good low mileage 2002 S2k can be had for under 20K.

Ken,
There are mixed opinions on the glass. As you know, the transition from plastic rear window to glass happened with the MY02 introduction.
The plastic has a bigger viewing area. With proper care, it can remain clear and mostly crease-free. There are some terrific products to help you care for plastic (Plexus comes to mind) that you can read about in the Wash/Wax s2ki forum.
That said, the glass has a rear defroster which is helpful for some climates. I don't know what region you're in, but that might be a factor.
Also, keep in mind that at some point you're going to have to change the top anyway. These things don't last forever. I had a tear in mine after three years, and it was changed under warrantee. You could consider switching to glass (if you buy an MY00-01) at that time. You could also have the hardtop here, which is the best of all worlds for bad weather driving.
Anyway, stuff to think about... Best wishes.
