Noob vtec question
Greetings! I just purchased my first S2K, a 2002 Berlina Black S2K with a JDM engine with 50k miles, 108k on the body. I want to enjoy VTEC once in a while but want to avoid problems. I know I have to monitor oil level, but what are the most common causes of engine failure while in VTEC? Also, is there anything unique about the JDM engine? I am 68 years old and don't plan to scream through curves in VTEC on a regular basis, but...

don't know of any engine failures in relation to a sound Vtec system
Don't think Vtec engagement is allowed until Oil temp reachs a specified level. Personally I don't hammer the throttle until I have at least 4 bars on the temp gage ( takes less then 5 mins)
Vtec does not discriminate due to age, I'm 64 and I hit Vtec every outing.

There really aren't any engine failure issues that is directly related to the VTEC system. There is a VTEC solenoid and there are certain parameters that need to be met before the ECU will engage VTEC. Like you already mentioned, be consistent with oil checks. AP1s tend to burn oil consistently so be aware of that. As long as the engine is healthy, it can hit VTEC all day everyday.
