cayman owners one last chance to talk me out of it
To all Cayman owners who were former s2k owners now is your chance to wail before I purchase an S2k-2009. I will make purchase asap (next 48 hours). This has nothing to do with affordability- can afford a Cayman S.
I have driven a Cayman at Lime Rock for 1/2 day and took a Cayman S out on an extended test drive yesterday.
Today drove the PHRT Miata with suspension package and z4si.
First things first- the least exciting was the z4. It was the best handler outside of the Cayman but did not like engine sound and something about it did not turn me on. It did not "feel" like the 3 series.
The Miata was just great- if Cayman or s2k did not exist would have bought today.
OK- here is the thing- I guess my expectations were so low for the s2k (everyone with the outdated engine, lousy interior, slow off the line, not great steering feel) that I really drove it just to make sure it was all true. But it just drives so nice and feels so effin good. Yes it is relatively slow but I like the way it takes its time all the way to the redline- it is the joy of not rushing at my age (53.5) that makes life worthwhile.
Anyway the Cayman and S are fantastic period- incredible balance - well you know the rest but, but not enough to drive me away from the s2k.
I have owned 11 cars in the last 9 years including Vette, used 911, TT Supra (blown), 68 Bumble Bee Camaro 350 small block (blown and used as DD), Cobra, and G37S and several DD SUVs.
I guess where I am is the less is more approach. I know the Cayman would be great but in about 14.5 months I will be complaining about the power etc.etc.
Why not be happy with something that is just simple, well made, solid - uh...a Honda????
Thx.

Definitely something of a dilemma. Life is too short to have one car forever...you'll never discover the greatest car that way.
I'm looking at going the other direction. I've had some great cars in my life (TR-4, 240Z, Lancia Scorpion, Miata, M3, and s2k). The s2k has been my favorite so far...and I've kept it the longest. But the Cayman S is becoming affordable to me on the used market. I love the looks...magazines have raved about it's handling the way they did about the Miata 20yrs ago and the S2k 10yrs ago. It may be that I get the P-car and learn to appreciate the s2k all the more...who knows...but I'll never know if I don't try it.

You'll never be able to buy a new S2000 again. Used will always be there.
Cayman (S I hope) will always be there.
May sway you one way or the other.
Also, do you see yourself getting another car in a few years?

My brother has a Cayman S, oh my god the handling is superb, I am looking for an s2000 for myself, but when I drive the Cayman its just a very fun car to drive. I hope to find a S2000 soon. If you get a Cayman go with the S.

I've driven the Cayman. I wouldn't do anything less than the CS.
I currently have a Porsche Turbo and S2000 and I have to say I enjoy the S2000 much more. I've gone through a bunch of cars - Porsches, Audis, etc. and the S2000 is the only car that I'm planning on keeping for a while.
