Two Michelin Pilot Sport Rear tires at COSTCO Waipahu
I just picked up my Michelin Pilot Sport 245/45/ZR16 rear tires at COSTCO, Waipahu. COSTCO shipped in 2 extra tires that will be shipped back on Friday, 19 April, unless someone wants to buy them. I think the exact cost for both tires was $535.48 with tax. The shipping time was 4 to 5 weeks.
I see no problem mixing the Michelins on the rear with the Bridgestones on the front because I don't drive my S that aggressively. I'll order Michelins for the front eventually.
If anyone is interested, call me at work 433-1655. Leave voice mail if I'm not there.

Hi there Ed. It was nice seeing you again last Sunday at the meet
I'm not in the market just yet for replacing the rear tires, and I'm a little short on funds anyway (with taxes I still owe, and my $500 deductible for the cut top).
How are the Michelin Pilot Sports compared to the S02's? Is the compound sticky like the OEM tires, or is it made for longer life?
BTW, I double checked my idle RPM and I gave you inaccurate information. It does usually idle at 1000 and only OCCASIONALLY dips to the 800-900 range...

I think the Pilot Sports are more comparable to the S03's. Not as sticky as the S02's but better traction in the rain. Both Pilot Sports and S03's (I think) should last longer under "normal" driving conditions.
Ed, I still want to know how you like the Pilot Sports when you get them.

All,
Thanks to all who signed the recent sympathy card.
There have been a number of threads regarding the Pilot Sport. They are supposed to provide a softer ride than the S02's because the tire wall flexes more. Those who have used them already have said they like them. The treadwear rating is also higher. I'll tell the COSTCO tire manager to return the tires. I guess someone thought the same size tire was used on the front and decided to ship 4 tires.
Steve, Ok on the idle. Mine occassionally drops to 600 or 800 also.
The 6th bar is 1000 rpm so if you divide by 6, each bar represents 166.67 rpm, but I don't think the scale is linear. I would like to know the precise rpm at each bar on the scale between 0 and 1000. Does anyone know where to connect an external tach to get a precise measurement?
