Some Pics from todays small get together

Nice picts....the last time I drove there, I saw cracked beer bottles, locals on jacked up 4x4's, a Japanese model in a photo-shoot.....definitely felt out of place there. Don't get me wrong....it's probably me. I grew up in Kalihi and grew up in the housing projects. But man, I just don't feel "local" in some places anymore.

Any local here can "out-local" me. I stopped speaking pidgin. Most of my friends I grew up with in Kalihi are either off the Islands or have lost contact. I was away from the Islands for most of my professional life -- traveling. The people I work/socialize with are usually mainland transplants.
I don't fish, surf, or any water sport for that matter. I don't follow UH football with any passion. Not all that crazy about Hawaiian food. It's shallow, but really it is the basis for an identity which I don't share.
I'd probably leave Oahu if I could. This place does not seem like the place I grew up in. The innocence is gone. I felt more friendliness/courtesy in the South (though, friends tell me they were being "polite") than here.
I feel a disconnect to this place. But this is probably due to the fact that I've changed. And I'm more aware how racially segregated our communities really are and for the most part do not professionally/socially intermingle.

Very Well said! I feel the same way about the area of the states that I grew up in. But then again, I guess anyone would if/when you have spent as much time away from it as I have.
