I know this thread is hella old but I just got my safety check done and they just checked:
Head lights
High beams
blinker lights
reverse light
brake light
windshield wipers
horn
Thats it and it took less then 5 minutes. PM if you want direction to the place, I think it was called Pauls garage or something. It also only cost $20.00 you don't need an appointment or anything. I asked if we should call ahead of time but he said just come by.

Yeah he didn't check the height of the lights. He didn't mention anything about my car being lowered. He also didn't say anything about the lisence plate not on the front of the car. I was just suprised by how easy it was to get it done. I guess it's normal though.

individual stations can charge whatever they want for safety checks. i was told the stickers are purchased from the state at a flat rate and the safety check stations set their own prices. kinda shady if you ask me, but hey i'll pay a little more if it means getting by without stupid recon!

Not only are they purchased at a flat rate, but they have to guess how many stickers to purchase at the beginning of the month. if they are left with old stickers, the state won't take them back for refund. that's why at the end of the month, lots of stations don't have stickers left. they always buy less than they think they can sell, if not they get screwed
