congrats! since she is working in downtown and you don't want to deal with traffic it would be preferable to live in honolulu. commuting does add about 45 minutes to 1.5 hours of depending where you live (outside of honolulu) as far as areas, just post where'd you'd be interested in renting and we can chime in. gl!
as far as the s, no other place can you be topdown all year long i wouldn't street park my03 but parking in a structure is ok if you end up living in downtown.
if not downtown, a carport is good but a garage is best!

Thanks bouford for the reply.
hows the makiki and salt lake areas and manoa area. also how would the commute be from those area into downtown honolulu.
also on a different note - how are the hawaii laws on automobiles. is it like california where we have strict emission laws with testing. should i convert back to stock or would i be okay with aftermarket parts?
thanks -

each neighborhood has it bad spots but manoa is typically safer since homes there are expensive ($/ft wise). salt lake is the farthest from downtown.
unlike CA we have no emission testing at all. we have a yearly safety check that ensures that car is safe. stock cars pass safety check easily.
modified cars (suspension) require a reconstruction permit aka recon. exhaust, rims and body kits are no longer recon items. see old thread below:

I lived in makiki all my life. ^like bouford said u have ur bad points in all areas. From wat ive been theough growing up in makiki... As long as u mind ur own business and do ur thing theres no problem. Makiki is very central to a lot of places. Its about 5-10 minutes from downtown without traffic and about 10-20 minutes with lots of traffic haha.
Manoa is more of a quiet area since its in the mountainous region haha. There can be traffic if something happens on the road because there is usually only one lane going around manoa haha

throw on as much parts as you can before you ship your car, because once it gets down here, shipping for those parts will add up quick.
Salt lake is a nice area, right on the outskirts of town. But if you're planning to do a condo/aptmnt in salt lake, they're mostly on the boarder of what i'd consider trouble area
btw, grats on the move to hawaii! it'll be fun!

Officially here in Honolulu now. I didn't ship the S just yest since I did not know the layout of the area we are leasing. Shipped the wifes MDX over on pasha and it took 8 days to get here. Now I have to get safety inspection done and register with dmv. I will have to do some work on the S before it comes over. It's currently dumped on coilovers with a body kit. Thanks everyone for inputs. I haven't seen a s2000 yet since i've been here? Hopefully I'll see you all around the island.
