Hawaii Raceway
i got this email from a friend regarding the racetrack....
I (don jonston?)talked with Mike Oakland yesterday about the legislation that he and
others are promoting. The lease on the current Hawaii Raceway is up
in 2006. Since 1993 Mike has been working with a number of people on
a new Hawaii Motorsport Complex at the former Barbers Point NAS. The
design includes a 1/4 mile drag strip, dirt oval and cycle course, 1.1
mile low bank speedway and interior road course (1.2 to 2.3 miles)
The site, plans, environmental studies, etc. have all long been done and approved. A
number of major racing leagues and national driving schools are pledged to
come to Hawaii for this complex. The bills propose a tax break incentives to get the track going as it is a costly startup venture. The proposals are similar to past incentive programs given to hotels and production companies.
Support is need from the motorsport hobby, car clubs, off road cycle
groups, dirt and drag racers, and fans of all local and national motorsports. The rally on Feb. 21 is a followup to the legslation to show support for the need to get this motorsport complex going before the curent tracks at Kapolei close. You can read about the proposed legislation (one of four bills to be considered in committee in the State House and the Senate over the next few days) on the web site listed at the
bottom of this page.
