Default Gear Installation

Just found out we can get cheap 4.77 gear from a Miata, or Kia.

I'm wondering if anyone here replaced there's yet.

If so where did you get it done locally?
How long have you had it in?
How did it hold up?
And how much did it cost?

I believe Joey and Steve did it already and price was in the $300 range. How much is cheap? I know the gear set I am looking at is $900+.

This is all from memory, so it won't be completely accurate, but I got the 4.44 gear set for about $700. The installation was about $400. I had it done at Pearl City Autoworks. It's been in for a little under a year, and I've had no problems. In fact, I love 'em. I do mostly town driving though. If you're on the freeway daily and like to go above 65 for extended periods of time, be prepared to listen to your engine revving 4500 rpm+ for the duration of the journey.

Yeah, don't rub it in.

When mods for the S2000 were hard to find, a gear set cost north of $1,200. As time went by, there were better and better deals. When it got down to about $700 I thought it was a steal, but the price keeps on dropping.
They were worth it at $700. Now it's an absolute best 1st mod IMO (if it works out for your type of driving, that is.)

No. I don't tend to street race, unless I know the other driver, and I haven't seen any 350Z's at the track yet (autocross). I raced my friend's G35 from a roll at about 60 and beat him several times, but not by a lot! The aerodynamics does come into play the higher you go though.

No, I did not have to do anything with the install of the gear. The shop did it all. I just had to be sure to change the diff oil twice afterwards at the recommended intervals.

Try to come out to our meet this Sunday if you get a chance.

It's been a while since I've been in Steve's car. I'm very lucky to be one of the few that got the chance to drive his car with the new gearset (but not on his race rubber and alignment). The gears accentuated how good his car already was. If memory serves, didn't I say that it felt like you got an extra 30 horse during the fun runs Steve? I almost wet my pants and I don't think Steve will let me near the car if I did.
