Hey guy's the hurricane chicken story is not the true reason we have so many chickens here on the island. The true reason is that this is the only hawaiian island that does not have the mongoose.

I noticed that as well on my last trip to Kauai in 2002. The reason is Tropical Storm Iniki that hit Kauai very hard in 1992. Although, it was never classified as a hurricane it was thought to be a Class Five. It did $1,800,000,000 in damage. And I guess that one could include all of the chicken coops that it destroyed, thereby liberating and creating the Kauai "Free Range" chicken.
You are right! They are all over the island.

My tip: Eat Spam. It's delicious as musubi and all over the islands.
It can rain pretty heavily there - poor horsie
Some of the roads on Kauai are awesome -
For some reason Kauai was full of chickens
I forgot what these were called - but they were tasty (not as good as fresh lychee but pretty darned good anyway )

Just returned from the Big Island of Hawaii not to long ago, if you are going to travel there I recommend the Hilton Waikaloa Village. There is no substitute if you like a big resort.
Definately eat at the Italian place on the property and try Roy's in the nearby King's shops. The blackend ahi with spicy mustard is
Captain Zodiac is also a great little adventure snorkel tour. The snorkeling off of the Captain Cook monument can not be beat, and we encountered many humback whales up close (only among the islands Jan-March), dolphins and the zodiac rafts get up to about 60 mph. Lots of fun.
