buying car from California
Hi, I am thinking about purchasing a used S2000 from a private party in California and shipping it back to Hawaii. Is there anyone who has done that before?
My question has to do with registration and tax. In California, they tax sales on new and used cars. I believe people pay the tax when they go and register the car.
In Hawaii, if you purchase a car from a private party, you can get taxed.
For used car sales in California and shipping it to Hawaii, is there any way to avoid registering in California (and therefore avoid the sales tax) and registering in Hawaii? I believe that I need to handle all the paperwork in California when I take delivery. What's the logistics of going about that? Will Matson complain about the car not registering to me?
Thanks alot.

You don't get taxed on private party car sales in Hawaii. You can't ship the car here and register it in Hawaii? You can get taxed less in Cali if you tell em you bought the car for less than u actually did, because they tax you on how much you bought the car for. My friend registered his wrx in cali but wrote down that he paid only $3k for it, and got taxed less.
