To the OP, im black i get treated nice here but then again I've never had a problem with race im just so damn sexy it never mattered. Hawaii living is just so laid back compared to mainland living. I love it and hate it at the same time. I came out here to live with my gf, and I mean my money went pretty quick. You wont experience real Hawaii living until you get a job. You only live once, come on out here, I think the experience alone is worth it.
I stick out like a sore thumb, I have the Cali mentality some people like it some people dont. Speed limit being 45 on the freeway will take time to adjust.

I plan on having my car paid off, my girl's lease over with, be married and have $10-20K saved up for the transition. I'm not willing to fail at this life decision. I think I will be doing a lot of research over the next 2-3 years.
I do want to add that every instance of the word "haole" reminds me of "asshole", it's just missing two s's. I wonder if there's a connection.
Oh, and 45 on the freeway?!? Doesn't sound very free to me. I've seen triple digits on my way to work in ATL traffic.
Smaller roads maybe?

not its 50 and 55 and 60 in some places. there are a few sections that are 45 because of merging traffic.
and it doesnt mean that you cant see triple digits here but if your caught its jail time.

Being another mainlander about to move out there I appreciated this thread! Although I don't have to worry about finding a job being in the military I still think there will be plenty of stuff to adapt to once I get out there.
The license plate comment was something I didn't really think about before!!
I hear they aren't too fond of newbies learning how to surf......
I did live in Cali for about 5 years and long boarded occasionally, am I going to be prosecuted for looking like a dumb ass as I learn how to short board out there?
Also I hear the base I will be at (Kaneohe Bay) has pretty good surfing, so maybe if any of you are good I could get you on base and you could show me the ropes?
I say go for the move man. My mom did it 35 years ago when she was 18, broke, just graduated high school. She figured out a way to go to school and live on no money for 14 years and got a medical nursing degree. She was the main motivation for me picking these orders, mostly because it is a different kind of living, one that I believe will be full of great memories for the rest of your life, whether you stay or not!
Looking forward to it myself!

you should be alright surfing on base since most locals cant get on there anyway. just be wary of the spots in town and on the north shore with a heavy local dominance. its a dog eat dog world out there and i've seen it get ugly. if you surf in waikiki you should be fine since pretty much everyone out there is a noob (not saying you are) anyway.
