That will make cutting the backer much easier. Especially if you use Durock.

Get at least 1/2 in backer and get the right screws. They are green and have square heads.

I has table saw, miter saw, air gun for trim work. All you need to get is the the nails. If you want to cut backer board, get blade for it and you can use my ish.
